Late this afternoon, travel from Ayers Rock Resort to the Uluru sunset viewing area. Enjoy nibbles and complimentary Australian Sparkling Wine as the sun starts to move towards the western horizon and brings out the colours Uluru is famous for! It is recommended that you photograph Uluru at least every 5 minutes to capture the gradual colour changes of the rock that you may not notice with the naked eye.
Hotel: Outback Pioneer Hotel, Desert Gardens Hotel or Sails in the Desert Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort, 4 nights.
Travel to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) where your Driver Guide will explain the geological history of the area. Enjoy a light breakfast with a tea or coffee as you watch the spectacular sunrise. Not only do you have incredible views of Kata Tjuta’s domes, you’ll also see Uluru in the distance as the sun lights up the desert. After breakfast you’ll commence the Valley of the Winds walk. First stop is Karu Lookout. Along the way your guide will talk about the significance of the area to the Anangu people and show you how they’ve used the natural landscape for all their needs for thousands of years. Continue down the steep rocky path to the valley at the base of the massive domes. Keep an eye and ear out for the local birds and wildlife as you make your way to Karingana Lookout for incredible views over the plain and domes. Return to Ayers Rock Resort in time for lunch.
Included Meals: Breakfast
Today you’ll travel from Ayers Rock Resort to Kings Canyon, stopping for breakfast at Kings Creek Station along the way. Originally vacant crown land, the station now runs cattle and is the largest exporter of wild camels in Australia. Learn the intriguing story of Ian and Lynn Conway and their dedication to Aboriginal children in the region’s remote communities. Now get ready for hike to remember! Make the steep rocky climb to the rim of the Kings Canyon for spectacular views of Watarrka National Park. Follow the rim of the canyon stopping to look down into the canyon gorge from a series of look-out points along the way. Time permitting, your Guide may take you to the green oasis of the 'Garden of Eden' waterhole. The rim walk takes approximately 3 hours to complete and is rocky and steep in parts. It is recommended for those with a good level of fitness. If you wish to take an easier, shorter walk instead, you will explore the boulder strewn canyon floor, getting up close to the native plants and birdlife that call this part of the world home. After lunch (own expense), return to Ayers Rock Resort.
Included Meals: Breakfast
Rise early to travel to the base of Uluru where you’ll receive your breakfast. Accompanied by your guide, commence the Uluru base walk at sunrise. Beginning at Kuniya Piti, a sacred site, hear the Tjukurpa (Anangu – the local Aboriginal people - beliefs and law) story of the Mala Men. Continue anti-clockwise around Uluru to the Mala Walk, one of the most important habitation areas for the local Aboriginal people over thousands of years. The Mala walk includes a visit into Kantju Gorge, where after rainfall, water can cascade over the side of Uluru and plunge some 90 metres. After a short rest continue to the Lungkata Walk where your guide will tell you the Tjukurpa story of the cheeky Blue Tongue Lizard! Next stop is the Mutitjulu Waterhole, once an important water source for the Anangu people. Your guide will indicate the natural features of the landscape, Aboriginal rock paintings and relay more traditional stories relating to this special place. Finally walk back to Kuniya Piti where your walk began and board your air-conditioned coach back for the short trip back to Ayers Rock Resort. This afternoon enjoy a leisurely drive to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) for one of our favourite sunset experiences in Central Australia. Along the way your Driver Guide will explain the geological and cultural history of the area. Marvel at the unique flora and admire the view of the central valley of the domes of Kata Tjuta while you take in a magnificent outback sunset and relax with canapés and Australian wines. Return to your hotel approximately 1 hour after sunset.
Included Meals: Breakfast
This morning you will be collected from your accommodation to be taken the short distance to the exclusive Field of Light location. With just enough time for some background commentary on the internationally renowned artist Bruce Munro, you will arrive very excited to see his artistic endeavour.
Arriving in complete darkness, in the quiet of pre-dawn, this once in a lifetime experience will be etched in your mind forever. Enjoy walking through the field of 50,000 globes of light at your own pace, where Desert Oaks seemingly appear from nowhere as the dawn light creeps above the horizon, then make your way up to the top of a large sand dune to the Field of Light sunrise viewing area. Once at the viewing area, the AAT Kings team will be serving you tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Enjoy your drink as the sun starts to rise and lights up the surrounding desert. Watch in awe as it pops up behind Uluru, flooding the landscape with light. From the viewing area you can see both Uluru and Kata Tjuta while the desert comes to life. After sunrise you will be transported back to your hotel.
