The vibrant Indigenous culture, friendly local characters and magnificent landscapes you’ll encounter on this Top End journey will leave you spellbound. Cruise waterways teeming with wildlife, stay in safari-style accommodation in idyllic locations, and immerse yourself in the culture of the traditional Aboriginal owners of the lands you’re exploring. A myriad of deep gorges, plunging waterfalls and tranquil rock-pools add to the drama of your Top End experience.

1 April 2018 - 30 September 2018 ?
Day 1
Welcome to Darwin

Life in cosmopolitan Darwin, Australia’s only tropical capital, is vibrant but unhurried. A former frontier outpost on the Timor Sea, Darwin rallied heroically after air raids by the Japanese during WWII and the devastation wreaked by tropical Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Eve in 1974. On arrival, you’ll take an afternoon tour of the city with its mix of old and new architectural styles and cultural influences. The city centre is characterised by wide streets, leafy parks, retail outlets and outdoor dining. Tall, modern structures have begun to replace the old colonial-style buildings, but they still retain a tropical flavour with overhanging eaves, corrugated iron and lush vegetation. Some of the best-known landmarks are Christ Church Cathedral; Brown’s Mart, a sandstone building erected in 1883 and now home to the Darwin Theatre Company; and Cavanagh Street – Darwin’s original Chinatown. Join your Travel Director and fellow travellers at the colourful seasonal Mindil Beach Sunset Market and enjoy a cool drink under the coconut palms. There’s time to explore the marketplace before choosing something you like for dinner. You may like to try some fresh seafood, authentic Indian or Chinese cuisine or even Greek or Japanese.

Hotel: Adina Vibe Hotel Darwin Waterfront

Included Meals: Dinner with wine

Day 2
Darwin – Litchfield National Park – Katherine

Travel to Litchfield National Park today, pausing to examine the amazing phenomenon of hundreds of magnetic termite mounds standing up to two metres high in a wide swathe of otherwise empty terrain. Built with a north-south orientation by thousands of termites to control the interior temperature, some of these structures are over a hundred years old. Stop at Florence Falls, a spectacular double-plunge waterfall leading to a popular swimming hole, before venturing on to tropical Wangi Falls for a swim in its large, waterhole. The peaceful and evocative Adelaide River War Cemetery provides a break in your journey to Katherine, a thriving town that was originally established as an outpost on the Australian Overland Telegraph Line.

Hotel: Paraway Motel, Katherine, 2 nights

Included Meals: Breakfast and dinner with wine

Day 3
Katherine & Nitmiluk National Park

Aboriginal cultureBe my guest dining experienceToday, enjoy a Be My Guest experience when you join indigenous guides for a fascinating walk, to follow the ‘Footsteps of our Ancestors’. Learn about local bush tucker and traditional bush medicines, before a barbecue lunch. This evening, relax in tranquil surroundings on a Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) dinner cruise. A series of thirteen deep gorges carved through ancient rock by the Katherine River, there are many Aboriginal paintings on the sandstone walls throughout the system, some of which are thousands of years old. Discover the history and culture of the Jawoyn people, the traditional owners of Nitmiluk, as you explore the magnificent gorges with a backdrop of stunning rock-faces that change colour with the setting of the sun. You may catch glimpses of a myriad of bird species including ospreys, red-tailed black cockatoos, great bowerbirds and red-winged parrots. Freshwater crocodiles are to found in most parts of the river as they nest along the banks, but they are harmless to humans.

Hotel: Paraway Motel

Included Meals: Breakfast, Be My Guest lunch and highlight dinner

Day 4
Katherine – Kakadu

This morning stop for a swim at Edith Falls (seasonal), a superb series of cascading waterfalls and pools, before passing through the old gold-mining town of Pine Creek. Then travel deep into Kakadu National Park, an enormous, biodiverse nature reserve extending over nearly twenty thousand square kilometres. The Park is renowned for the richness of its Aboriginal cultural sites: there are more than five thousand recorded art sites illustrating Aboriginal culture over thousands of years. The archaeological sites demonstrate Aboriginal occupation for at least 20,000 and possibly up to 40,000 years. Kakadu’s varied landscapes and the habitats they contain are features that contributed to its listing as a World Heritage Area. Its abundant wildlife, including 280 bird species and ten per cent of all the crocodiles in the Northern Territory, make it a nature-lover’s dream. After lunch, learn about the traditions of the Bininj and Mungguy people of Kakadu before taking a guided walk to view ancient Aboriginal rock paintings at Nourlangie, regarded as one of the premier rock-art sites in the Top End.

Hotel: Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel, Jabiru

Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner with wine

Day 5
Kakadu – Mary River

This morning you may choose to take an optional scenic flight over Kakadu, or just relax and enjoy a sleep in. Later visit Ubirr, another of Kakadu’s foremost rock-art galleries. The paintings at Ubirr provide a fascinating record of Aboriginal life over thousands of years: look for naturalistic paintings of animals, traditional x-ray art, and paintings of early contact with European people. Before leaving the site, climb to the top of a nearby rocky outcrop for superb views over the floodplains and escarpment country. Your accommodation tonight is in a private permanent safari tent situated in the Mary River floodplains. The Mary River Wetlands Area, with its billabongs, woodlands, paperbark stands and monsoon forests, is a region of outstanding natural beauty. This evening, enjoy a Farewell Dinner with your Travel Director and travelling companions.

Hotel: Wildman Wilderness Lodge, Mary River National Park

Included Meals: Breakfast and farewell dinner

Day 6
Corroboree Billabong – Farewell from Darwin

Take a safari cruise this morning on the renowned Mary River Wetlands and Corroboree Billabong. Your local guide will share the secrets of these ancient waterways as you enjoy fantastic views across the vast floodplains, perhaps spotting wild buffalo and wallabies at the water’s edge. The Billabong teems with birdlife and also boasts the largest concentration of saltwater crocodiles in the world, but you can relax and view these awesome prehistoric creatures from the safety of your vessel as they swim and bask on the banks. Say farewell to your fellow travellers when your holiday comes to an end this morning this afternoon.
