Wizard of New Zealand Ian Brackenbury Channell

The Wizard of New Zealand

You’ve heard of the Wizard of OZ, but when you’re in Christchurch on this holiday, you may get the chance to meet the Wizard of New Zealand! He was born Ian Brackenbury Channell in 1932 in England and is known as an educator, comedian, magician, politician and public speaker, who has become something of a national icon of New Zealand, where he has lived since 1974. In 1982 the New Zealand Art Gallery Directors Association issued a statement that in their opinion the Wizard was an authentic living work of art and the City Council appointed him Wizard of Christchurch. In 1990 the then Prime Minister, Mike Moore, an old friend, appointed him the official Wizard of New Zealand. You can catch a ‘performance’ at New Regent Street in Christchurch most weekdays.
