Don't Miss

A pub with character

Have you ever visited a friendly old fashioned country pub? Well, on your way to Punakaiki you’ll call in on one that oozes charm and personality. It’s the Historic Empire Hotel in Ross, a small old gold mining town south of Hokitika with a population of about 300. It was built in 1908 and hasn’t changed much since then. It’s cozy, dark and welcoming and in winter you’ll be beckoned by a huge open fire. There are shields and trophies around the walls, faded posters and photos that could only be original; not a sight of anything secondhand here. You can have a drink, a yarn with the pub’s owner or just wander around the room to spot the memorabilia.
