This afternoon you will head out on a city sights tour of Wellington taking in New Zealand’s parliament buildings, and a visit to Maori Cultural Icon Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand. Discover New Zealand’s nature, history, art and heritage, and then enjoy some time at leisure. Indulge in Wellington’s renowned coffee culture, or take a walk along Lambton Quay.  This evening, meet your fellow passengers and your AAT Kings Travel Director at a Welcome Reception and dinner at your hotel.

Hotel: Travelodge Wellington

Included Meals: Welcome Reception and Dinner

Day 2-3
Wellington - Rotorua
Day 2: Wellington - Rotorua

Follow the state highway out of New Zealand’s capital city this morning and along the Kapiti Coast, the traditional summer playground of the inhabitants of Wellington city. Pass through a number of small towns along the road to Rotorua, each with their own personality and quirks. Probably the quirkiest of all would have to be Taihape… the self-proclaimed gumboot capital of the world. You will then journey south over the Central Plateau, New Zealand’s main volcanic area. In a country of contrasts, perhaps nothing is more striking than the three peaks of Tongariro National Park rising starkly from the surrounding plateau of tussock and near-desert. The three mountains, Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe that make up the National Park are all active volcanoes, and are popular in winter and summer – skiing and snowboarding on the mountainous ski fields , and amazing walks including the Tongariro Crossing. The road ahead unfolds in a broad panorama of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake. The stunningly blue fresh water of Lake Taupo is home to some of the best trout fishing in the world. On arrival in Rotorua an orientation tour takes in views of Lake Rotorua.

Maori Cultural IconTonight an evening of culture, history and scrumptious food awaits you at the Tamaki Family Marae. Wander through the ancient forest village and learn about Maori art forms and traditions, followed by a concert featuring local performers. Experience an authentic Maori Hangi meal, steamed underground in the traditional way.

Day 3: Rotorua Sightseeing

Today is your chance to experience the scenic wonders of the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua. This morning you will head to the Agrodome Sheep Show, a hilarious, interactive way to gain an insight into New Zealand’s biggest industry – agriculture. After the Agrodome, you may wish to travel back to Rotorua township and relax lakeside, or you may prefer to choose from one of the varied Optional Activities on offer.  Take a scenic flight out over Lake Rotorua for a bird’s eye view of the region. You may even want to stop at the top of Mt Tarawera, the site of the largest eruption in New Zealand’s living memory! Explore Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park, and take a ‘behind the scenes’ tour through the working kiwi nursery and hatchery. Visit Te Puia and join a guided tour through the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, home to famous Pohutu Geyser and the bubbling beauty of the mud pools. Later, why not spend a little more time experiencing the thermal wonders, with a soak in the hot mineral waters of the Polynesian Spas? Your AAT Kings Travel Director will assist you in booking all of your chosen optional activities.

Tonight you have the option of staying at your hotel or on a nearby farm – see the panel below.

See the amazing underground Glow Worm Grotto by boat and walk through the limestone caverns. This afternoon you will follow the meandering trail of the Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river, past the lush farmlands of the Waikato Region. As you journey over the Bombay Hills, the landscape changes from green, grassy meadowlands to the edges of suburbia. As you make your way into the heart of New Zealand’s largest city, you will stop at Bastion Point and the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, as you will get stunning shots of Auckland, the North Shore and the Waitemata Harbour. This evening celebrate your holiday, and enjoy dinner at your hotel with your Travel Director and fellow travellers.

Day 5-6
Auckland - Bay of Islands
Day 5: Auckland - Bay of Islands

This morning depart Auckland City and travel north over the Harbour Bridge. Journey through Orewa and along the scenic Hibiscus Coast, the birthplace of Sir Edmund Hillary. Enjoy a stop at Parry Kauri Park and take a walk among New Zealand’s native forest giants, the Kauri trees.  Your travels then take you into Whangarei, the northern-most city in New Zealand, where you can wander around the art galleries and through the marina in the Town Basin. This afternoon you will travel into the beautiful Bay of Islands. Experience spectacular scenery as you cruise through game fishing waters to Cape Brett and, weather permitting, through the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’ formation. The return cruise to Paihia meanders through picturesque islands – see deserted sandy beaches and secluded bays and keep your eyes peeled for the marine life. This evening enjoy dinner with your travelling companions at the hotel.

Day 6: Bay of Islands Free Time

Today is a completely free day, for you to experience the beauty of the Bay of Islands. Perhaps head back out on to the water and go on a dolphin watching cruise, and maybe even jump in the water for a swim with these magnificent creatures. Or take a coach trip up to Cape Reinga - the very top of New Zealand, via idyllic Ninety Mile Beach. Experience a day of sailing aboard a historic tall ship, enjoy wine tasting around Kerikeri, or join a jet boat Heritage Cruise and learn a little more about the settling of the Bay of Islands. Tonight you are free to dine as you wish. You may want to experience a ‘Kiwi tradition’ – fish and chips on the beach, or glide down the Waitangi River on board the Ratanui for a sumptuous dinner cruise.  Your AAT Kings Travel Director will assist you in booking all of your chosen optional experiences.

Hotel: Copthorne Resort Bay of Islands, Garden Rooms

Included Meals: Day 5: Full buffet Breakfast and DInner; Day 6: Full buffet Breakfast

Day 7
Bay of Islands - Auckland

This morning you will have the opportunity to visit the Waitangi Treaty Reserve, where New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed. As you stroll through the reserve, you will see highlights such as the Waka - Maori War Canoe and an intricately carved Marae - Meeting House (optional - own expense).  Alternatively, you may want to travel over to historic Russell, New Zealand’s first capital. This afternoon sit, back and relax as you make your way down through Northland’s lush farmland scenery and past the sprawling suburbs of the North Shore of Auckland. This afternoon, you may want to head out and explore Auckland. Take a walk down Queen Street, to the main shopping precinct or catch a $1.00 bus (leaves from outside the hotel) down to the Viaduct Harbour and the Auckland Waterfront region. This recently developed area of central Auckland has cafes and restaurants galore. Take a seat in the sunshine and enjoy a relaxed dinner while watching the activity on Waitemata Harbour.

Tour departs from Wellington and returns to Auckland

Don't Miss

Whole and freshly cut kiwi fruit
Kiwifruit

The Big Apple in New Zealand? On this holiday between the Waitomo Caves and Rotorua, you’ll visit the ‘Big Apple’ to taste-test their delicious kiwifruit. Did you know that it contains 90% more vitamin C than an orange?! Originally known as the Chinese gooseberry, it was native to China but in the early 20th century spread to New Zealand, where the first commercial plantings occurred. It proved popular with American servicemen in New Zealand during World War II and because of this the fruit was exported to California using the names Chinese gooseberry and melonette. But when the California-based importer rejected these names, the fruit was rebranded kiwifruit due to its resemblance to the New Zealand kiwi bird.
