Deep in Australia’s untamed Northern Territory, where vast cattle empires stretch beyond the horizon and nature shows no mercy, Netflix’s gripping new drama Territory unfolds a tale of power, family, and survival. When the formidable Lawson family – owners of the world’s largest cattle station – find themselves without a successor, their empire becomes a target for every rival ready to stake their claim. The series showcases some stunning views of the Northern Territory’s Top End, which is known for its diverse landscapes including breathtaking cascading waterfalls, wildlife filled wetlands, rugged outback wilderness and vibrant sunsets. Let’s explore the remarkable real-life locations that bring this epic story to life.
Is Marianne Station a real location?
The Lawson family’s legacy is the Marianne Cattle Station. Hailed as the largest cattle station in the world, it is a fictional location made for the series. However, scenes that take place in the Marianne Station were actually filmed at Tipperary Station, a real working cattle station that measures 954,000 acres. In fact, Tipperary Station workers were used as extras in scenes. Their inclusion adds to the authenticity of the cattle scenes in the show.
Kakadu National Park
A World Heritage-listed wonder spanning nearly 20,000 square kilometers, Kakadu National Park showcases Australia’s most dramatic landscapes, from towering sandstone escarpments and cascading waterfalls to vast wetlands teeming with wildlife. The park holds profound cultural significance as the ancestral homeland of Aboriginal people who have lived here for over 65,000 years. Their ancient stories are depicted here in one of the world’s largest collections of rock art, including the famous galleries at Ubirr and Nourlangie. Beyond its cultural treasures, Kakadu is brimming with wildlife such as saltwater crocs, millions of migratory birds, and diverse ecosystems that transform dramatically between the wet and dry seasons. A main feature in the series, Kakadu National Park provides many filming locations including the “Sorry Place” – a sacred site to the Indigenous people in the show, as well as countless aerial view shots that highlight the vastness and rugged beauty of the Top End. Wangi Falls, Litchfield National Park
Cascading down ancient red cliffs in Litchfield National Park, Wangi Falls creates a mesmerising twin waterfall that falls into a pristine plunge pool surrounded by monsoon rainforest. The crystal-clear pool at the base of the falls provides the perfect swimming spot and respite from the heat. Wangi Falls serves as the backdrop where Susie and Lachie, two of the characters, share a romantic swim after a hard day’s work at the Cattle Station. Experience this majestic waterfall on our Top End Highlights tour.
Curtin Springs Station
Nested in the rugged heart of Australia’s Northern Territory this remote cattle property spans vast stretches of rust-red earth punctuated by ancient limestone formations and features a salt lake. The historic station, established in the 1920s, continues its legacy as a working cattle operation while also serving as a unique location from which to watch the sunset. See breathtaking Mt. Conner, a significant sacred site often mistaken for Uluru, as you pass through Curtin Springs on our Kings Canyon To Ayers Rock Transfer.
Kings Creek Station
Kings Creek Station is a working cattle and camel station sprawled across 2,000 square kilometers of red desert country in the Northern Territory’s center. The station has been run by the Conway family since 1981 and combines traditional pastoral operations with opportunities to take in the beautiful scenery. Cahills Crossing
A historic ford across the East Alligator River, Cahills Crossing serves as the iconic gateway between Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land, where twice-daily tides create a mesmerising spectacle as water flows over the concrete causeway. During the wet season, the crossing transforms into a powerful display of nature’s forces, with massive tides surging across the causeway and creating rapids so majestic that they draw observers from all across Australia. The crossing stands as a testament to the raw beauty of the Top End, where ancient landscapes meet powerful natural forces to create one of the Territory’s most photographed locations.
Darwin
Various locations in and close to Darwin were used to film Territory including Berry Springs Nature Reserve, Lee Point and Crab Claws Island resort.
Berry Springs Nature Park
Berry Springs Nature Park, located just 47 kilometers south of Darwin, centers around a series of crystal-clear natural pools fed by spring water and shaded by towering paperbarks and pandanus palms. The springs, which served as a recreation camp for armed forces personnel during World War II, now offer visitors a refreshing swimming experience with three distinct pools connected by gentle cascades, complete with a viewing platform and steps for easy access.
Lee Point
Another location featured was Lee Point. Its tidal flats and coastal woodlands provide habitat for countless shorebirds, including migratory species that travel thousands of kilometers from Asia, Lee Point is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. This tranquil coastal suburb in Darwin’s northern reaches features a pristine stretch of beach where spectacular sunsets paint the Timor Sea in brilliant hues of orange and pink. The coastal scenes on Nolan Brannock’s Laggan Downs property were filmed at Lee Point district and is where billionaire tycoon Sandra Kirby wants to build her port in the show.
Crab Claw Island Resort
Located on the Cox Peninsula, a unique part of the Northern Territory, Crab Claw Island Resort is a paradise for those who love the outdoors. Guests can enjoy bushwalking around the island, spotting giant mud crabs or even watching the turtles lay eggs on the nearby beach when the season is right.
Crab Claw Island Resort can be seen in Territory when Sandra Kirby offers Emily Lawson a tempting deal in the hopes of getting her to turn her back on her family.
