The Best Sunset Viewpoints from Around the World

Posted: 9 December 2019 | Updated: 9 December 2019

As a young backpacker, I was lucky enough to travel to the southern tip of India. One evening, I had the chance to watch the sunset from the beach overlooking the ocean. It was one of the most memorable moments of all my travel experiences.

Ever since, I’ve sought out some of the most beautiful locations across the world to see the sunset. From Santorini in Greece to Prague Castle and many more, I’ve always found a moment for myself and meditate on the wonders of the universe.

Here are my recommendations for the best spots in the world to catch a sunset. Head on over to one of 5 these impressive viewpoints and take a quiet moment to reflect.

Remember, the sun will set at different times throughout the seasons. Make sure you check the correct time to see each sunset. Let’s dive in!

Santorini, Greece

Santorini’s iconic Greek architecture already makes for some exceptional views. Combine this with black-red sand beaches and the deep oranges of the Greek sunset and you’re truly in for a special moment. It feels like you’ve been transported back to a mythical land of minotaurs and goddesses.

Kata Tjuta, Australia

Otherwise known as The Olgas, this unique rock formation easily has enough beauty to capture the imagination. Catch it at sunset, however, and the beautiful faces light up with a bright orange glow for a view you’ll remember for a lifetime. You’ll find the formation in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park alongside its two sister formation, Uluru, which you may know of as Ayers Rock. We recommend you visit both, although Kata Tjuta should be your sunset destination.

Montmartre, Paris

Cityscapes at sunset are about so much more than aesthetics. Climb Montmartre at sunset and you’ll know exactly what I mean. An ethereal glow falls across Paris and, in that moment, it’s like you can feel every Parisian beating out their lives to the same rhythm. It’s a magical feeling. After you’ve taken a moment for yourself on the steps of the Basilica Sacre-Coeur, walk down into town to finish off the evening with a nightcap (or two!).

Isle of Skye, Scotland

The Isle of Skye was most likely named after the Norse word for cloud. It’s not difficult to see why. The rocky, open expanse of the islands landscape makes the sky feel that much bigger and more beautiful than usual. When the sun reaches the horizon, the sky turns a blissful purple-orange colour. When you’re done watching the sunset, make sure you grab a glass of the local whiskey to unwind before bed.

Khwae Noi River, Thailand

Popularised by the film ‘Bridge On The River Kwai’ the river and the bridge are visited often to commemorate those lost in the tragic incident of 1943. In Thailand, the bridge still stands and with the sunset behind, it feels a suitable place to reflect on the history of the region. The valley of the Khwae Noi River is extremely beautiful and makes for a beautiful sunset backdrop. Make sure you take some time to visit the Sai Yok Lek waterfall a little further along the river.
