Morning of Day 6, Alice Springs

On arrival at Ayers Rock Airport you’ll be transferred to the resort (flights to arrive prior to 1.30pm).

This afternoon, visit the Uluru–Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre. Then travel around the base of Uluru (Ayers Rock) in comfort as your Driver Guide provides commentary about the sacred sites and features to be found at Uluru. Continue by coach to the Kuniya Walk where your Driver Guide will escort you to the Mutitjulu Waterhole. View Aboriginal rock paintings and learn about the area as your Driver Guide explains the Aboriginal and European history of Uluru.

Late this afternoon, witness the striking colour changes of Uluru at sunset while enjoying sparkling wine. Continue to our exclusive barbecue area where you’ll be served a variety of Australian meats and salads and a tasty dessert with wine, beer or soft drink. After dinner, your guide will conduct a tour of the night sky (weather permitting).

Hotel: Outback Pioneer Hotel, Desert Gardens Hotel or Sails in the Desert Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort, 2 nights.

Included Meals: Dinner

Watch the first rays of the sun set Uluru and the Red Centre alight, while enjoying a warming cup of tea or coffee. Then travel to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). On the way enjoy panoramic views of the southern side of Kata Tjuta before arriving at the base of Walpa Gorge.

Spend some time exploring the gorge and the unusual conglomerate rock formations. This afternoon return to Kata Tjuta and take in a magnificent outback sunset with nibbles and sparkling wine.

In the early afternoon, travel through desert scenery on your way to Kings Canyon Resort. Pass through Curtin Springs Cattle Station before viewing Atila (Mt. Conner) from your coach. After you arrive at Kings Canyon Resort there may be time to view the sunset behind Carmichaels Crag.

Hotel: Kings Canyon Resort, Standard Rooms or Kings Canyon Resort, Deluxe Spa Rooms

This morning join a guided climb to the rim of Kings Canyon for marvellous views of Watarrka National Park. Time permitting, you may choose to descend into the green oasis of the ‘Garden of Eden’. Or, you may wish to take an easier, shorter walk to explore the boulder-strewn canyon creek bed.

Afterwards, depart for Alice Springs, stopping at Kings Creek Station to purchase lunch (own expense). Travel through beautiful desert landscapes with informative commentary provided by your Driver Guide. Continue to Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway, as the sun sets over the rugged plains.

Hotel: Aurora Alice Springs, Doubletree by Hilton Alice Springs or Mercure Alice Springs Resort, Alice Springs, 2 nights

This morning you’re headed for the beautiful West MacDonnell Ranges. Walk through Simpsons Gap to the waterhole, keeping an eye out for the elusive black-footed rock wallabies hiding among the rocks. Next stop is Angkerle (Standley Chasm). Take a walk along the stony watercourse, where spring-fed pools attract a great variety of wildlife and birds. At the Ochre Pits you can see the natural ochres in the cliff face that have provided a source of materials for Indigenous people for thousands of years.

Enjoy a Bushman’s lunch, followed by a visit to Glen Helen Gorge. Ormiston Gorge offers all the spectacular geology and landforms of the Tjoritja/MacDonnell Ranges. Next you’ll arrive at Ellery Creek Big Hole, a spectacular waterhole in the mighty Ellery Creek, which cuts through a gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Enjoy the late afternoon sun reflecting on the MacDonnell Ranges as you return to Alice Springs.
