Waitomo Glow Worm Caves
The spectacular Waitomo Glowworm Caves are located just 2 hours south of Auckland and are a world famous attraction in New Zealand. The name Waitomo comes from the Maori words ‘Wai’ meaning water and ‘Tomo’ meaning sinkhole. It is here that you can discover the maze of underground rivers, caves and sinkholes. Visitors can either choose to take a boat ride along the underground river or follow the walk in the caves, in order to view the thousands of magical glowworms that lay above.
Experienced guides will also offer commentary explaining the historical and geological significance of the caves. These glowworms, scientifically known as Arachnocampa luminosa are well known for the luminous light that they radiate and are unique to New Zealand, making these caves a must see. Within the caves you can also experience the incredible and fascinating limestone formations, crystal tapestries and amazing stalactites.
