Milford Sound
Located approximately 300 kilometres north west of Queenstown within Fiordland National Park is the awe-inspiring natural wonder, Milford Sound. One of New Zealand's must see destinations.
Actually a fiord rather than a sound as its name might suggest, Milford Sound was formed by the erosive effects of a glacier. This is as opposed to a sound which is a river formed valley which has been flooded by the sea.
It is the only fiord accessible by road, along a stunning alpine drive through unspoiled mountain landscapes. Despite its accessibility, the remoteness and rugged beauty of Milford Sound is bounded by steep cliffs, dense rainforest and remains tranquil.
Running 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea, the sound is surrounded by mountains that reach up to 1512 metres high. One that resembles an elephant's head and the other a crouching tiger are two of the tallest peaks.
