Geothermal Valley
The geothermal valley located at Te Puia is a popular tourist attraction showcasing powerful geysers and boiling mud pools that are the result of volcanic activity thousands of years ago. There are a number of geyser’s within the geothermal valley, however the most famous is known as Pohutu Geyser and is single handily the most photographed attraction in all of Rotorua. This beautiful natural wonder erupts to a height of 30 metres up to 20 times a day, rarely disappointing gathering onlookers.
The mud pools within the geothermal valley are Nga Mokai a Koko – ‘The playthings of Koko’, which has a depth of 6-10 metres and reaches temperatures of 90-95°C and Purapurawhetu – ‘Star Dust’, which gets its name from the pattern that is formed by the boiling mud.
