Cairns
The tropical city of Cairns is located 1,700 kilometres north of Brisbane in Far North Queensland. Situated on a coastal strip between the Coral Sea and the Great Dividing Range, you’ll find plenty to see and do in and around Cairns with several natural wonders at its doorstep. In the city itself, you will find markets, lovely cafés and plenty beaches.
In addition to the natural wonders, Cairns is also close to the Tjakpukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, both of which can be explored on a day tour with us. On our trip to Tjakpukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, you will discover this ancient culture through bush food lessons, didgeridoo demonstrations and the famous Tjapukai Dance. At Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure’s, you can also enjoy the unique eco experience of a spectacular Wetlands cruise through the ecologically significant Melaleuca wetlands, the domain of the saltwater crocodile.
Great Barrier Reef
Undoubtedly the most famous natural wonder accessible from Cairns is the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Easily accessible with a day trip from Cairns, this vibrant colourful reef is the world’s largest single structure made by a living organism - so large that it can be seen from space! Stretching for 2000 kilometres The Great Barrier Reef is a true experience of a lifetime. The Daintree Rainforest
A short trip north from Cairns is the largest tropical rainforest in Australia, the Daintree Rainforest. This lush World Heritage Listed rainforest is home to some of the oldest surviving rainforest in the world. Nestled in the heart of the Daintree Rainforest is Cape Tribulation, a headland situated at one of the only places where two World Heritage sites, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef meet. Port Douglas
Just a stone’s throw away will find you at the gorgeous seaside village of Port Douglas. A gateway to some of Cairns’ sights, here you can visit the Wildlife Habitat Park and meet some of Australia’s native wildlife such as the kangaroo, koala and the dangerous but beautiful cassowary. In addition to the outdoor beauty surrounding Port Douglas, the tropical town is also home to cool eateries and some beautiful resorts which can be explored on our Tropical Reef & Rainforest Short Break.
Kuranda
Further north west you’ll find Kuranda, the ‘Village in the Rainforest’. Located in the heart of World Heritage Listed Barron Gorge National Park; here you can browse the famous local heritage markets, take in the captivating sight of Barron Falls and ride the iconic Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, showcasing ancient rainforest and spectacular views and the Kuranda Scenic Railway. On our Tropical Trails journey you will board the Kuranda Scenic Rail in Freshwater for the historical rail journey to Kuranda enjoying breathtaking views across the cane fields of Cairns, to the tropical rainforest of Kuranda. Wind through hand-hewn tunnels, across bridges and curves, all the time appreciating what an amazing engineering feat it is.
