Explore New Zealand’s exquisite North Island, visiting cities that resound with a friendly welcome normally felt in small towns. Travel into the rustic, unspoilt coastal regions of the Coromandel and the Bay of Islands, where dazzling white beaches and historic villages are the norm.

Itinerary

1 October 2017 - 30 September 2018 ?
Day 1-2
Welcome to Wellington
Day 1: Welcome to Wellington

On arrival at Wellington Airport you’ll be met by private car and transferred to your hotel. The afternoon is at leisure for you to explore Wellington. You may like to take a walk along Lambton Quay and immerse yourself Wellington’s famous coffee culture. Or meander along the waterfront following the Wellington Writers Walk, where quotes from New Zealand writers are celebrated in large stone sculptures. This evening meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers for a welcome drink and dinner back at your hotel.

Day 2: Wellington ‘Free Time’

Today is free for you to experience Wellington. Perhaps join a tour of New Zealand’s Parliament buildings and the ‘Beehive’ or take a ride on Wellington’s famous cable car from the central business district up to the Kelburn lookout for stunning views of the city. You may want to experience the world of movie special effects with a tour to The Weta Cave – home of the creative wizards behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Or learn about New Zealand’s history and culture with a visit to Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand. Your Travel Director will assist you in booking your chosen optional experiences. This evening why not venture down to Courtenay Place or Cuba Street and dine at one of Wellington’s tucked-away bars or quirky cafés.

Hotel: Sofitel Wellington, 2 nights

Included Meals: Day 1: Dinner with wine. Day 2: Breakfast

Day 3
Wellington – Taupo

You’ll travel along the rugged Kapiti Coast, past the dairy farms of the Manawatu through to Tongariro National Park. In a country of contrasts, perhaps nothing is more striking than the three peaks of Tongariro National Park rising starkly from the surrounding plateau of tussock and near-desert. The three mountains, Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, that make up the National Park, are all active volcanoes and are popular in winter and summer. The stunningly blue fresh water of Lake Taupo awaits you. Before arriving at the hotel, you will stop in to view Huka Falls and you will pass the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station.

Hotel: Hilton Lake Taupo

Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner with wine

Day 4-5
Taupo – Rotorua
Day 4: Taupo – Rotorua

There’s time to explore the township of Taupo, or perhaps try your hand at trout fishing before continuing to nearby Rotorua. Now it’s time to gain an insight into local Maori culture and history with our special Maori show and traditional Hangi. Experience the heart-pounding wero (challenge) from a Maori warrior during a Powhiri, a ceremonial Maori welcome. Journey into the village and hear how the Maori lived in New Zealand prior to the arrival of the European settlers. You will experience the local customs like the Hongi greeting as well as learn some customary phrases. Feast on succulent meats and vegetables cooked in a hangi, the traditional Maori method of cooking in the earth using geothermal steam.

Day 5: Rotorua

We’re off to see the multi-awardwinning and highly entertaining Agrodome Farm Show for a sample of Kiwi farm life. See the art of sheep shearing, sheepdog demonstrations, cow milking, bottle feeding of lambs and an exciting sheep auction. Your next stop is Rainbow Springs Nature Park. Here you’ll discover the beauty of the native bush, ferns and trees that grow around the crystal clear mineral water springs and take a ‘behind the scenes’ tour through a working kiwi nursery and hatchery. You might even spot a Kiwi Sam or two! To complete your day, visit the Whakarewarewa Living Village for an insight into Maori life and how they interact with the geothermal activity.

Hotel: Regent of Rotorua, 2 nights

Included Meals: Day 4: Breakfast, Highlight dinner. Day 5: Breakfast

Day 6
Rotorua – Coromandel

Day 6: Rotorua – Coromandel You’ll make our way to the famous Waitomo Caves to visit Cave World, for an exclusive 5 star Eco glowworm experience. It’s just a short walk through breath-taking New Zealand native bush before your guide sets the scene for a cave experience, where you’ll see glowworms and cave formations and get to appreciate the beauty of Footwhistle Cave. Later, travel through the dairy farming district of Waikato, and now you’re off to the Coromandel Ranges to Puka Park Resort, where you’ll stay in Tree Hut Chalets, set among the native bush.

Hotel: Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco Hotel and Resort

Visit the Sky Tower for 360° views of the region and surrounding volcanic hills. Amble down Queen Street to the main shopping precinct or on to the Viaduct Harbour and the Auckland Waterfront region. This recently developed area of central Auckland has cafés and restaurants galore. Take a seat in the sunshine, enjoy a glass of one of New Zealand’s famous Sauvignon Blancs and watch the maritime activity on Waitemata Harbour.

Travel to Orewa and the scenic Hibiscus Coast, the birthplace of Sir Edmund Hillary. Then continue to the Waipoua Forest, a sanctuary that is home to many native trees including the largest Kauri tree in existence, Tane Mahuta (over 2,000 years old). A Maori guide will walk you through the native bush and explain the history and legend behind the mighty Kauri. Head to your waterfront resort in the heart of the beautiful Bay of Islands. Tonight it’s dinner at the resort.

Day 9: Bay of Islands

This morning you’ll take a ferry across the harbour to historic Russell, for a walking tour of the first European settlement and capital of New Zealand. The rest of the day is at leisure. Perhaps take a dolphin watching cruise, experience sailing aboard a historic tall ship, enjoy wine tasting around Kerikeri, or join a jet boat Heritage Cruise. Tonight you are free to dine as you wish. You may want to experience a ‘Kiwi tradition’ – fish and chips on the beach, or glide down the Waitangi River on board the Ratanui for a sumptuous dinner cruise. Later you’ll have some time in Paihia to check out the local craft shops, do a spot of shopping or go for a walk along the beachfront. Lamb burger with locally produced lamb

Lamb Burger anyone?

It’s a fact that people in New Zealand are greatly outnumbered by sheep, and their sheep-to-person ratio is high relative to other countries. At seven, it’s higher than Australia's, for example, which currently has three sheep per person. As with New Zealand, this is due to declining sheep numbers and a growing human population. Some sheep history: New Zealand's first sheep were set ashore by Captain Cook in 1773. Rapid sheep population growth in the 1850s and 1860s was due mostly to permanent immigration, rather than natural increase. The first shipment of frozen lamb and mutton sailed to London from Port Chalmers on The Dunedin in 1882. It goes without saying that on this journey you’ll get the chance to try a lamb burger, made of course from locally produced lamb!
