The land on which Perth lies now was once known as Boorloo.
Perth is also known as the 'City of Light'. Astronaut John Glenn orbited above in 1962 and could identify Perth because everyone turned on their lights, making Perth highly visible.
The city has four major streets running east to west - St George's Terrace, Hay Street, Murray Street, and Wellington Street.
Western Australia is the largest state in Australia. It amounts to a third of the area of Australia, with a total area of more than 2,500,000 sqkm.
Margaret River was first settled in the mid-1800s by immigrants from England. One of the prominent pioneer families were the Bussells, for whom the Bussell Highway is named.
The Margaret River wine region is home to 138 wineries (as of 2008).
The region produces both red and white grapes. Varietals include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Shiraz, Merlot, Chenin Blanc and Verdelho.
Due to its climate, seasonal temperatures and average rainfall, the Margaret River wine region is often compared to Bordeaux, France.
