Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Darwin

On arrival at Darwin Airport you’ll be transferred to your hotel (flights anytime). Today is free to relax and explore Darwin

Hotel: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Esplanade Darwin (Superior), Darwin, 3 nights.

Day 2: Litchfield National Park

We follow the Stuart Highway via the township of Batchelor to Litchfield National Park where we will visit the main falls. First stop is Florence Falls, where you have the opportunity for a scenic and interpretive bush and monsoon vine forest walk. There is also the chance for a swim by making your way down the stairs to the plunge pool below. Travel on to Tolmer Falls for a magnificent view of the water cascading down to the deep waterhole at the base of the falls. Finally we visit Wangi Falls, with its large crystal clear pool, another relaxing spot for a swim. A great day for taking many fascinating photos, including the amazing stand of termite mounds. A buffet lunch is included today.

Day 3: Darwin

After a free morning to relax, join a city sights tour for the perfect introduction to Darwin, with expert commentary by a local guide. See the lush Botanic Gardens and the Chinese Temple, which was re-built after it was totally demolished by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Tour the historic sites of the city including the East Point Military Precinct. See the Stokes Hill Wharf area and the Mooring Basin. There is also time available to explore the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, whose collections encompass Aboriginal art, visual arts and Northern Territory history and natural sciences.

Day 4: Darwin – Kakadu National Park

Depart Darwin and travel along the Arnhem Highway, their major river systems and wetlands, into Kakadu National Park. Located 257 kilometres east of Darwin, this national park covers 20,000 square kilometres of landscape from rocky escarpment home to historic Aboriginal rock art dating back thousands of years, to floodplains abundant with wildlife. Visit the Warradjan Cultural Centre to view the informative displays depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu. Join your local guide on a cruise of Yellow Water Billabong. Search for saltwater crocodiles and the colourful range of birdlife for which this region is renowned. After lunch, stop at Nourlangie, where your Driver Guide will lead you 86 on a walk to view the rock art galleries.

A scenic flight is the ideal way to appreciate the sheer scale and beauty of Kakadu and the Arnhem Land Escarpment. You’ll discover winding rivers, spectacular 1.8 billion years of continuous erosion, billabongs, flood plains and view the Archway, East Alligator River Valley, Mikinj Valley Billabongs and Magela Floodplains.

Day 5: Kakadu National Park – Darwin

This morning join your Driver Guide to explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr, where you’ll climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, believed to be 20,000 years old, to the lookout for the view over the surrounding wetlands. Join the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise along the East Alligator River with an Aboriginal guide. This wonderfully scenic cruise is a great introduction to the Aboriginal cultural context of the Territory. Watch for a variety of wildlife, including crocodiles. Learn about the ancient culture and legends of the region. With special permission from the local custodians, disembark on the Arnhem Land side of the river for a short walk into Arnhem Land. Enjoy the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in ancient Aboriginal culture during a display of traditional hunting and gathering techniques and implements. Visit the Bowali Visitor Centre. Return journey to Darwin.

Day 6: Katherine Gorge Cruise

Leaving Darwin we travel south through tropical country, passing former WWII airstrips en route to Adelaide River. We make a short stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, a site dedicated to those killed in the air raids in Darwin in the 1940’s. Continue to Edith Falls, where there is time for a refreshing swim in the paperbark and pandanas fringed waterhole beneath the falls (conditions permitting). After your included lunch, we join a 2 hour scenic cruise through Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park, with a chance to see freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks of the river and many interesting species of birdlife (between May – September lunch may be on board cruise). Our tour of the first two gorges takes us past sheer rock walls and requires a short walk to reach the second gorge. Enjoy a brief tour of Katherine, the hub of the region’s cattle and farming industries. Travel via Pine Creek, an historic gold mining town, to our evening stop at Adelaide River where you may purchase dinner (own expense) before returning to Darwin.

Day 7: Darwin 'Free Time'

Today you have the opportunity to explore Darwin at your own pace.

Day 8: Depart Darwin

Your short break concludes this morning in Darwin. You’ll be transferred to Darwin Airport for your onward flight (flights anytime).

Fitness requirement

Low to moderate level of fitness required:

  • Litchfield: Florence Falls – Climb 100 steel steps to top or walk at steady pace on the uneven base walk to viewing platform.
    Tolmer Falls – steady 10 minute walk on established path.
    Wangi Falls – 5 minute walk through rainforest.
  • Kakadu: Small amount of walking including a 10-15 minute walk on uneven ground with a gradual climb to the viewing point. There is wheelchair access, however, this is on uneven ground and is accessible for only a small part of the walk and must have a carer to assist.
  • Katherine:  Small amount of walking.
