Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Darwin

On arrival at Darwin Airport you’ll be transferred to your hotel (flights anytime). Today you are free to explore Darwin.

Hotel: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Esplanade Darwin (Superior), Darwin, 3 nights

Day 2: Litchfield National Park

Leaving Darwin, we follow the Stuart Highway via the township of Batchelor to Litchfield National Park. Visiting the main falls of the Park, you have the opportunity for scenic and interpretive bush and monsoon vine forest walks. View Florence Falls from a high vantage point before making your way down the stairs to the plunge pool below with an opportunity to swim, making your way back via the monsoon forest and open woodland. We visit Tolmer Falls for a magnificent view of the water cascading down to the deep waterhole below. We venture to Wangi Falls for another opportunity for a swim in the large crystal clear pool and an optional steady climb through the rainforest to the top of the falls. Return to Darwin this evening.

Day 3: Darwin

Enjoy a morning at leisure in Darwin. Join a city tour this afternoon for the perfect introduction to Darwin, with expert commentary by a local guide. See the Chinese Temple and the lush Botanical Gardens. Tour the historic sights of the city including the East Point Military Precinct. See the Stokes Hall Wharf area and explore the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, which houses stunning permanent collections of Aboriginal art.

Day 4: Darwin – Jumping Crocodile Cruise – Kakadu National Park

Cruise on the Adelaide River, home to over 1,600 crocodiles, on the Jumping Crocodile cruise. See these prehistoric creatures up-close as your local guide entices the crocodiles to leap out of the water. Then you’ll travel into Kakadu National Park. Covering more than 20,000 square kilometres, World Heritage listed Kakadu is the largest national park in Australia. The combination of mangrove fringed coastal areas, expansive flood plains, lowland hills, and open woodland and forest habitats, make Kakadu one of the most diverse landscapes you’ll ever experience. It’s home to a myriad of animals, hundreds of bird species and thousands of different insects and plants. Enjoy lunch in Kakadu National Park before a stop at the Bowali Visitor Centre. Continue to Ubirr, where you’ll climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, believed to be 20,000 years old, to the lookout for the view over the surrounding wetlands.

Optional Experience: Add-on a 30 minute scenic flight over Arnhem Land Escarpment

A scenic flight is the ideal way to appreciate the sheer scale and beauty of Kakadu and the Arnhem Land Escarpment. You’ll discover winding rivers, spectacular 1.8 billion years of continuous erosion, billabongs, flood plains and view the Archway, East Alligator River Valley, Mikinj Valley Billabongs and Magela Floodplains.

Day 5: Kakadu National Park – Katherine

Take a guided walk at Nourlangie Rock where your Driver Guide will lead you on a walk to view the rock art galleries. Visit the Warradjan Cultural Centre to view the informative displays depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu. After lunch, join your local guide on a cruise of Yellow Water Billabong. Search for saltwater crocodiles and the colourful range of birdlife for which this region is renowned. Travel to Katherine.

Day 6: Katherine – Gorge Cruise – Darwin

Enjoy a cruise through Katherine Gorge and watch for crocodiles basking in the sun before stopping for breakfast (included). Visit the informative National Park Information Centre then continue to Edith Falls. The paperbark and pandanas fringed natural pool at the base of the falls is safe for swimming throughout most of the year (conditions permitting) Stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, en route to Darwin.

Day 7: Darwin 'Free Time'

Today you have the opportunity to explore Darwin at your own pace.

Day 8: Farewell from Darwin

Your tour concludes today in Darwin. You’ll be transferred to Darwin Airport for your onward flight (flights anytime).

Fitness requirement

Low to moderate level of fitness required:

  • Litchfield: Florence Falls – Climb 100 steel steps to top or walk at steady pace on the uneven base walk to viewing platform.
    Tolmer Falls – steady 10 minute walk on established path.
    Wangi Falls – 5 minute walk through rainforest.
  • Kakadu: Small amount of walking including a 10-15 minute walk on uneven ground with a gradual climb to the viewing point. There is wheelchair access, however, this is on uneven ground and is accessible for only a small part of the walk and must have a carer to assist.
  • Katherine:  Small amount of walking.
