The ‘Big Lap’ – conquered by those who have the time – explores the majority of the country. If you\u2019re looking to visit the Great Barrier Reef as well as the capital, then on to Canberra down at the bottom of the country, a trip by road might be your best option.<\/p>\r\n

You can either hire your own car and drive the distance or get involved in a tour with a travel company. To help you out a bit, we’ve narrowed down the best road trips around Australia. All you need is a sturdy mode of transport, LOTS of snacks, a half-decent camera, and you’re off.<\/p>\r\n

Port Douglas to Cape Trib <\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

If you’re looking for a relaxing yet worthwhile drive, then this is the one for you. This trip starts at fisherman town, Port Douglas in northern Cairns. It follows the Captain Cook Highway passing various gorgeous beaches. On the windy drive, you can stop at Daintree rainforest<\/a> for a bit of adventure. The captain cook highway will then turn into the Cape Tribulation road. Prepare to be out of words when you gaze upon the glistening Great Barrier Reef’s sparkly sea.<\/p>\r\n

\u00a0Savannah Way<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

The Savannah Way adventure drive spans across a fair bit of the country. It starts in Cairns and goes further west to Broome. This is a popular drive for tourists as it links beaches and national parks in an eventful ride. It’s estimated to only take 4 and a half hours too if you’re feeling short on time. It’s not too bad.<\/p>\r\n

The Great Ocean Road <\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

The Great Ocean Road<\/a> is the ultimate road trip. This one stretches along the southern Ocean at the bottom of the country. Starting a short 90 minutes away from Melbourne, it’s a recommended choice. The colourful nature views and charming seaside towns are never-ending. It’s said to be one vision after the next with surfing breaks whenever needed.<\/p>\r\n

If you feel like stretching your legs then make sure to park your car up and do the Great Ocean Walk. Stroll from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles for the striking coast you’ve been waiting for.<\/p>\r\n

Cairns to Brisbane <\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

If you’re not short on time, then this is a convincing choice. By train, the journey would take a solid 24 hours so the drive is a longer, yet more satisfying, experience.<\/p>\r\n

Following the Pacific Coast way, it’s around 1,700km but it can only be worth it. From north Queensland, Cairns to popular Brisbane (or visa versa). Expect starry nights, ocean scenes, nature and much more. Either direction you go, expect other tourists on the same route and you’ll learn exactly why. It’s a once in a lifetime journey.<\/p>\r\n
