Long gone are the days when travel was about collecting stamps in a passport and scratching tourist\u00a0attractions from a superficial sightseeing to-do list. Today\u2019s savvy travellers are demanding encounters and\u00a0experiences that leave them with knowledge and understanding as well as memories and photographs.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Sure, snapping a selfie for Facebook or capturing a video for Instagram will always be part of the travel\u00a0story. But posing for a picture only takes a few seconds and, these days, travel is about embarking on a\u00a0significant journey of discovery that builds the knowledge needed to make the world a better place. It\u2019s\u00a0about contributions that change the world for the better and leave a location untarnished for those that follow.<\/p>\r\n

Travel isn\u2019t about taking, it\u2019s about giving. And for careful travellers it\u2019s about being clean, green,\u00a0responsible and respectful. This is sustainable tourism, and it\u2019s at the core of everything we do at AAT\u00a0Kings.<\/p>\r\n

Talking the talk – eco-tourism, sustainable travel and responsible holidays<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

Put your hand up if you can articulately explain the difference between eco-tourism and sustainable travel.\u00a0Top marks if you\u2019re sitting there with your digits stretched skyward, we\u2019re sending a gold star your way.<\/p>\r\n

But if your hand is still on the mouse, or wrapped around your coffee cup, you\u2019re not on your own as most\u00a0people struggle to grasp what makes a holiday experience eco-friendly and when it steps up to become\u00a0sustainable.<\/p>\r\n

And to tell you the truth, there\u2019s a very fine line separating these concepts.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Sustainable tourism is an ambition to leave a destination undamaged. To visit a place and have a positive\u00a0impact on the people, the environment and the wildlife. It\u2019s about spending time and money wisely,\u00a0supporting projects that generate revenue where it\u2019s needed most, walking softly, being respectful,\u00a0considering the carbon footprint, and not spoiling it for those that will follow in our footsteps.<\/p>\r\n

Eco-tourism is about something more specific. It\u2019s about visiting spots of natural wonder \u2013 those perfect\u00a0and pristine parts of our planet yet to be exploited and over explored \u2013 with a desire to learn more about\u00a0what makes them significant.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

This eco-tourism definition emerged in the late 1980s with one expert describing it as a \u201csustainable form\u00a0of resourced-based tourism that focuses primarily on experiencing and learning about nature which is\u00a0ethically managed to be low-impact, non-consumptive, and locally-orientated\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Responsible travel comes by embracing sustainable travel and eco-tourism when it\u2019s time to hit the road\u00a0and uncover this fragile and fascinating planet we call home.<\/p>\r\n

Sustainability, that eco-tourism definition, and how we MAKE TRAVEL MATTER<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

It was not enough for AAT Kings to offer itineraries accessing the iconic locations that have long topped\u00a0travel wish lists \u2013 from UNESCO World Heritage sites to natural wonders and hidden gems promising\u00a0picture-perfect vistas \u2013 we had to be sure it was done in a sustainable way.<\/p>\r\n

After all, we have been taking travellers on tour for more than 100 years now and we want to ensure the\u00a0precious places we visit will be around for centuries to come.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

We work with groups on the ground, right around Australia and New Zealand, to preserve and protect\u00a0people and places while also partnering with The TreadRight Foundation to MAKE TRAVEL MATTER\u00ae<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

The TreadRight Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation created by The Travel Corporation \u2013 and\u00a0supported by the company\u2019s famous family of brands \u2013 to promote sustainable tourism practices.<\/p>\r\n

How We Tread Right is part of the Foundation\u2019s five-year strategy to sustainability and it\u2019s our mission to\u00a0fill itineraries with thoughtful experiences that are not only culturally conservative and environmentally\u00a0sensible but help fund projects that benefit people, planet and wildlife.<\/p>\r\n

Our goal is to ensure that 50 per cent of our trips will include at least one MAKE TRAVEL MATTER\u00ae.\u00a0Experience, with the aim of achieving this by 2025. In order to do this, we\u2019re supporting projects in our\u00a0destinations which align with these goals and seek to educate our guests on the importance of treading\u00a0lightly when we travel.<\/p>\r\n

The mission and how we are making a difference<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

The TreadRight Foundation\u2019s mission is simple. It exists to have a positive impact on the people and\u00a0communities we visit, to protect wildlife and marine life, and to care for the planet we call home.<\/p>\r\n

We support indigenous initiatives and call on the Yarliyil Art Centre during Wonders of the Kimberley to\u00a0discover how this northern community is making tradition the foundation of culture while a stay at Ayers\u00a0Rock Resort during Outback Safari subsidises health programs for Red Centre communities.<\/p>\r\n

When it comes to planet preservation we\u2019re uniting with South Pole \u2013 an organisation focused on\u00a0establishing decarbonisation pathways \u2013 and assisting revegetate Victoria\u2019s Annya State Forest with native\u00a0flora after the plot was illegally cleared 20 years ago.<\/p>\r\n

We also back numerous local projects and on Perfect Tasmania there\u2019s the chance to support a sensitive\u00a0ecosystem by planting natives at a not-for-profit nursery, guests \u201csleep softly\u201d in eco-tents during\u00a0Untamed Kimberley & West Coast, and national park fees contribute to regional conservation campaigns.<\/p>\r\n

Wildlife is the third pillar of The TreadRight Foundation and we\u2019re backing Rotorua\u2019s Rainbow Springs Kiwi\u00a0Hatchery by sponsoring eggs from incubation to hatching and release, with guests embarking on Contrasts\u00a0of New Zealand treated to a behind-the-scenes tour to understand the tireless efforts to save New\u00a0Zealand\u2019s national bird.<\/p>\r\n

Sustainability doesn’t mean sacrificing on service<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

When eco-tourism and sustainable holidays were in their infancy a clean and green holiday meant trading\u00a0on the creature comforts and little luxuries of life to walk the road less travelled. But those days are well\u00a0behind us with AAT Kings seamlessly blending sparkling service with the ideals of responsible travel.<\/p>\r\n

Our signature has long been personalised care, the best accommodation a destination has to offer, and\u00a0exclusive experiences but we continue to raise the bar.
