It\u2019s a dramatic\u00a0Hollywood\u00a0setting indeed. A long stretch of\u00a0soft\u00a0black sand is bookended by towering cliff headlands. Naturally warm hot mineral water bubbling up beside the sand? It\u2019s a thing at Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula. For two hours either side of low tide, you can dig your own heated spa tub in the sand \u2013 a soak\u00a0in healing water packed with magnesium, potassium and calcium,\u00a0just a few metres from the brisk ocean. Hot tip: local cafes rent out buckets and spades to help you dig, if you don\u2019t have your own.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

When you\u2019re not reviving your muscles, find\u00a0a\u00a0shady perch to have a snooze, try your hand at surfing the reliably good waves or head to Cathedral Cove, just\u00a0a\u00a0five-minute\u00a0drive\u00a0away.\u00a0This equally beautiful beach\u00a0features\u00a0on just about every NZ postcard\u00a0on the rack. Rarawa Beach, Far North<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

Best for:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0The softest white sand you\u2019ve ever seen<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

If you\u2019re visiting Rarawa, make sure you\u00a0bring\u00a0your sunglasses. The silica sand here is so white, it can be blinding. It\u2019s also soft, so much so that it squeaks beneath your feet. And your footprints\u00a0may be the only ones\u00a0you see\u00a0\u2013 the beach is that isolated. It\u2019s framed by dunes\u00a0on one side\u00a0\u2013\u00a0home\u00a0to colonies of nesting birds\u00a0including oystercatchers\u00a0\u2013 and\u00a0turquoise sea on the other. Swim, fish or surf, or drive a 4WD on the sand in the beach\u2019s middle section.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is part of the\u00a0Paxton Point Conservation Area at Te Paki, a glorious swathe of wilderness near the tip of the North Island.\u202f<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Wainui Beach, Gisborne<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

Holding the title as the most easterly point in New Zealand, Gisborne is the first town in the country\u00a0(and thus very nearly the whole world)\u00a0to see the sun rise. And the best place to catch that fiery glow? Wainui Beach, just north of the residential area. There\u2019s nothing more healing and soul-nourishing than swimming at the crack of dawn in an ocean coloured in a spectrum of orange and pink. When the wind is just right, Wainui also draws avid surfers with its consistently good left- and right-hand breaks.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Out of the water, find a picnic spot,\u00a0or wander along the trails weaving\u00a0through the dunes. Or expand your horizon to one of a string of equally gorgeous beaches nearby including Makorori (great waves for surfing), and Tolga Bay\u00a0(where you can swim off the longest wharf in New Zealand).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ninety Mile Beach, Northland<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

The name of this beach is a little deceptive \u2013 it\u2019s actually only 55 miles (88 kilometres) long. But that\u2019s still lengthy enough to mean that you\u2019ll see sand\u2026\u00a0and nothing else\u00a0\u2026\u00a0all the way to the horizon.\u00a0Occupying a stretch of coast at the top of the North Island, between\u00a0Ahipara and Scott Point along the country\u2019s Aupouri Peninsula, it\u2019s spectacularly pretty,\u00a0with\u00a0golden sand and dunes reminiscent of a desert landscape.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

The main attractions? Blazing sunsets, excellent left-hand surf breaks, standout fishing and the chance to drive your 4WD on the beach.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

If you arrive on this slip of sand and\u00a0think you\u2019re facing an army of dinosaur-sized turtles, you\u2019re not alone. The Moeraki Boulders that dot the beach\u00a0\u2013 some up to three metres in diameter \u2013\u00a0were formed 60 million years ago, gradually revealed as erosion took place. Geologists and nature lovers geek out here, but it\u2019s just as fascinating to photographers, who capture the boulders\u2019 bizarre surface patterns\u00a0comprised of\u00a0clumps of sediment.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

When you dive in, you\u2019ll share the water with yellow-eyed penguins, seals and Hectors dolphins, playing in the waves offshore.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Awaroa Beach, Abel Tasman<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

Best for:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Remote and ravishing\u00a0scenery<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Back in 2016, Awaroa made news headlines when locals set up a crowd-funding campaign to purchase the beach\u00a0from its private owners. It\u2019s\u00a0so\u00a0scene stealing\u00a0that they wanted to keep it eternally available to \u2018the people\u2019,\u00a0hence\u00a0donating it to the government thereafter.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

No roads\u00a0reach Awaroa\u00a0\u2013 it\u2019s deep in Abel Tasman National Park. The fact you have to hike, cruise or chopper here makes it even more special.\u00a0Head to the tidal estuary at the northern end to witness the hypnotic hues that transform the sand banks as the tide recedes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Punakaiki Beach, West Coast<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

Best for:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Nature writ large<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

You\u2019ll\u00a0feel the cool mist of water on your face when you visit Punakaiki.\u00a0But it\u2019s not from waterfalls.\u00a0The beach here is home to several geological wonders, immense blowholes among them.\u00a0At high tide, waves crash to shore through rock chasms and send sea water flying into the air. Rainbows\u00a0complete the fairytale picture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

The\u00a0setting is made even more otherworldly by the beach\u2019s\u00a0Pancake Rocks\u00a0\u2013 layered limestone formations surrounding\u00a0the blowholes. It\u2019s a natural magnet for fur seals, Hector\u2019s dolphins, blue penguins and the tui, among so many other birds and animals that flock here to bask in the West Coast sun.\u00a0Fish, kayak and then hike through neighbouring Paparoa National Park.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Kaikoura Beach<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

Best for:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0A swim\u00a0with a side of crayfish<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mountains meet the sea in Kaikoura on the South Island\u2019s Northeast Coast. Which means your time spent on the black beach enjoys the dazzling backdrop of the Kaikoura Ranges. Rent a kayak (or snorkel) and paddle around the cove, keeping watch for seals and penguins playing\u00a0in the water and on the rocks. Further out to sea, you might also glimpse whales and dusky dolphins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

The town itself is the only place in the southern hemisphere to\u00a0be\u00a0awarded an EarthCheck certification for its dedication to sustainable tourism. Needless to stay, it\u2019s postcard perfect.\u00a0And lined with seafood restaurants.\u00a0All are good, but Nins Bin steals the show for fish-and-chips, whitebait patties and whole fresh crayfish with garlic butter.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Haast Beach<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

Best for:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Swimming in a UNESCO World Heritage area<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Less than 100 people call the village of Haast home. They\u2019re all onto a good thing. This pocket of the South Island is so pretty that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage area. The\u00a0predictably-named\u00a0Haast River runs into Haast Beach, creating a wild and wonderful waterway you\u2019ll share with few other people.\u00a0This part of the West Coast is remote, and the\u00a0kind of place that reminds you just how insignificant you are in the world \u2013 in the best possible way.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n

The rest of the\u00a0coast, between Haast and Jackson Bay,\u00a0is just as\u00a0jaw-dropping. But don\u2019t take our word for it \u2013 jump into\u00a0a helicopter to\u00a0zip over\u00a0far-flung\u00a0coves so vividly azure you\u2019ll\u00a0swear they\u2019re\u00a0painted. Or feel the wind in your hair on a jet-boat tour, keeping watch for fur seal and penguin colonies.\u00a0Then lace up your hiking shoes to explore trails that take you through Westland rainforest\u00a0webbed\u00a0with sparkling rivers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n
