AAT Kings offers a range of Guided tours, Flexi trips and Day tours to Tropical North Queensland.
Port Douglas is the perfect base to explore the best of Tropical North Queensland. Named after former Premier of Queensland John Douglas, it was once a mining town after the discovery of gold. From the time failed businessman Christopher Skase financed and invested in the construction of the luxurious hotel Sheraton Mirage, tourism has become its main source of income. With its tropical climate of warm summers and winters, no wonder locals and international guests make Port Douglas a must see destination.
Back in 1996, then President Bill Clinton and the First Lady made Port Douglas their holiday getaway after their official visit of Australia, which put Port Douglas on the map internationally. In 2012, this is the place you’ll want to be to experience the solar eclipse, this will occur on the 14th November at 638am. Port Douglas will be your base to explore the amazing Daintree Rainforest and The Great Barrier Reef.

Tropical North Queensland is the perfect destination to visit any time of the year but the best time is during the dry season from July to November. During the rainy season, or better known as stingray season, you’ll not have full opportunity to experience its stretch of beaches. But it’s the rainforest in this top part of Australia that visitors from around the world come to visit. The Daintree Rainforest has been described as a living museum; it’s by far the oldest rainforest, some 120 million years old. It has gone through all climate changes and the ice age and while dinosaurs no longer roam this vast landscape, the cassowaries and crocodiles that inhabit in this region are its closest relatives.
The evolution of land plants such as ferns, conifers and cycads can be found here and animals unique to the Daintree that have not changed in appearance since ancient times such as the musty rat kangaroo. Here are some interesting facts that you may not be aware of. Measuring 1200 square metres, the Daintree is home to 25% of Australia’s frogs, 33% of Australia’s mammals, 33% of all the freshwater fish living in its many freshwater lagoons and 50% of Australia’s living birds.
On your Queensland holiday of this region, you’ll have a free time to explore this world heritage listed rainforest further. Join a guided cruise on the Daintree Rainforest and spot the descendants of the dinosaurs, the crocs.
