Ubirr Kakadu

Kakadu

The World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park is the largest park in Australia covering more than 110 000 square kilometers in the north-east corner of the Top End. The spectacular escarpments and wetlands abundant with wildlife make Kakadu an exhilarating outback holiday.

Kakadu’s rivers, plains and wetlands are home to more than one third of Australia’s bird species plus other wildlife like crocodiles, kangaroos, wallabies, reptiles and fish. A cruise on the waterways of Yellow Water Billabong and the East Alligator River is the best way to get a close-up view of Kakadu and its flora and fauna.

With the permission of the local Aboriginal people, go ashore at Arnhem Land and observe a part of Kakadu that is entirely owned by Aboriginal people. Arnhem Land is renowned for its rainforests, escarpments and strong indigenous culture.

The proud history of Aboriginal people in Kakadu is represented in rock art dating back around 20 000 years. Kakadu has the highest concentration of Aboriginal rock art in Australia. Walk around Ubirr or Nourlangie Rock and see this amazing history for your self. From the top of Ubirr you’ll find stunning views of the surrounding wetlands and escarpment country that make Kakadu so unique.

Katherine Region

It’s said that Katherine is ‘where the outback meets the tropics’. 300 kilometers south of Darwin, Katherine is the third largest town in the Northern Territory and has a pioneering history dating back to 1862.

The stand-out of the region is Katherine Gorge. Cruise through the gorge with a local guide and you’ll see an array of wildlife and rich birdlife. The gorge is surrounded by sheer sandstone walls that have been formed from Katherine River over a billion years.

South of Katherine you must visit Mataranka, made famous by Jeannie Gunn’s 1908 novel ‘We of the Never Never’. Jeannie lived at Elsey Homestead with her husband in 1902 and wrote of her time there. You can explore Old Elsey Cemetery where some of the novel’s characters now lie and see a replica of Elsey Homestead used in the filming of the 1982 film based on the novel.

Take a swim in the relaxing Mataranka thermal springs with a constant temperature of 34 degrees Celsius and the picturesque surroundings of lush palms.

For an authentic Aussie outback social experience, be sure to have a cold drink at Daly Waters Historic Pub. It’s the oldest pub in the Northern Territory and has a quirky character that will leave you laughing.
