Ken Duncan photographic collaboration

Everyone at AAT Kings loves to travel. We’re passionate about sharing the amazing experiences and spectacular diverse landscapes of Australia with all our travellers. So, teaming up with someone equally as passionate made great sense, like Australia’s pioneer in landscape photography, Ken Duncan.

“Like AAT Kings, I am truly passionate about Australia and showcasing the rugged beauty, colour and wide open spaces of the ‘Land Down Under’. It is this passion for our great land that keeps me inspired to do the work I do”.

Ken Duncan, Landscape Photographer

Our partnership with Ken is about a shared enthusiasm for Australia’s landscapes. It’s about bringing the destination to life through great travel imagery. The collaboration started with the launch of AAT Kings’ Tasmania 2010/11 brochure, where we included some of Ken’s spectacular natural landscape shots.

Since then we’ve commissioned Ken to join AAT Kings in the Red Centre to take shots exclusively for us of some of the region’s most iconic landmarks for inclusion in our Northern Territory brochure range.

AAT Kings is a proud sponsor of Ken’s new book ‘Walking in the Light’. Due out in November, the book spans his career, celebrating the very best of his iconic shots with 96 highlight images from his far-reaching Australian photographic journeys.

Ken Duncan captures first light at Uluru

With expertise from AAT Kings’ Driver guide for top notch locations, combined with Ken’s expert eye, the crew spent the first afternoon in the region scoping the area for the best spots to shoot. To ensure they could take advantage of the best locale, light and photo opportunities the team was up early the next day so Ken could capture the sun rising over Uluru (Ayers Rock).

One of the best spots for the sunrise viewing is Talinguru Nyakunytjaku lookout, perfect for observing Uluru being ‘set alight’ by the first rays of morning light. Watching the vibrant colours of Uluru shift as the light changes is a stunning, unforgettable experience our passengers enjoy every day.

Ken ensures he gets the best perspective

Then Ken hit the road with AAT’s Driver guide looking for the best places to take pictures of the luxury AAT Kings coaches. Getting the best shot is all about being creative, so Ken climbed on top of the 4WD to ensure he got the best perspective.

That afternoon the team travelled back to Uluru to see the sun set over the Rock and, once again, capitalise on the important role light plays in photography.

Ken recommends not being afraid to take lots of pictures while you are travelling. True to his word, he set up his camera to take photos of Uluru every 30 seconds over 2 hours to see just how much the lighting changed!

Ken and the local AAT Kings guide had no shortage of stunning places to cover on the shoot. On day two, the crew walked to one of the most famous waterholes at the base of Uluru, Mutitjulu Waterhole. The waterholes are an important water source for local aboriginal people and animals, and have been for thousands of years.

The last afternoon of the trip saw the team visit Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and take a series of shots in Walpa Gorge, watching as the sun set over the massive domes of these mystical rock formations.

Here are some tips for you to capture your own amazing shots when travelling...

  • Think about the composition of the image; look at the foreground, focal point and background.
  • Take plenty of pictures and spend time considering the angle of your photograph. The best shots are often the ones you least expect.
  • Keep your camera handy. You never know when a great photo opportunity might arise.
  • Lighting is a vital consideration. Look for shadow and light and consider how this may enhance or detract from the image you are trying to capture.
  • Tell a story through your images - consider the mood and atmosphere that is being portrayed through the viewfinder.
  • Plan ahead and be prepared. Remember to charge your batteries, have space on your memory card or spare film - you don't want to miss a fantastic shot because your camera battery has gone flat.
  • Above all, enjoy yourself and have fun.
